The Netherlands is known for many things: windmills, wooden shoes, cheese, and, of course, tulips! Tulip Time, or "Tulpen tijd" in Dutch, is a time of year when the country is ablaze with colorful blooms, and it's the perfect time to visit if you're a fan of flowers, springtime, outdoor festivals and just simply enjoying the outdoors. Check out my latest video below:
Tulip Time in the Netherlands typically runs from mid-March to mid-April, and there are many things to see and do during this period. Here are three of the top attractions to visit during Tulip Time:
Keukenhof Gardens - The Keukenhof Gardens is the largest flower garden in the world, with over 7 million bulbs planted each year. Visitors can stroll through the park and enjoy the beautiful displays of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, as well as the many sculptures and fountains scattered throughout the gardens. It's a must-see attraction for any flower enthusiast.
The Tulip Fields and a Tulip Farm - If you're looking for an authentic Dutch experience, be sure to visit the tulip fields and a tulip farm. This can often be combined with a visit to Keukenhof as there are several farms close-by.
The Royal FloraHolland Auction - The Royal FloraHolland Auction is the largest flower auction in the world, and it's a great place to learn more about the fascinating world of the flower industry. Visitors can watch the auctions in real-time and see how flowers are bought and sold, and even take a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility.
There are two main ways to visit the Netherlands during Tulip Time: on a river cruise or with a custom independent itinerary. I love booking and planning both styles, and what you do really depends on many factors. Here are some pros and cons of each:
River Cruise:
Pros: A river cruise offers a hassle-free way to see the Netherlands during Tulip Time. You'll be able to visit multiple cities and attractions without having to worry about transportation or logistics. Plus, you'll have access to a knowledgeable guide who can provide insight into the local culture and history.
Cons: A river cruise doesn't have as much flexibility in terms of how you spend your time. Plus, you'll be traveling with a group of people, so it may not be as intimate or personalized as a custom itinerary.
Custom Independent Itinerary:
Pros: With a custom independent itinerary, you'll have control over your schedule and itinerary. You can choose which attractions to visit, how long to stay in each place, and where to stay. Plus, you'll be able to explore the country at your own pace and on your own terms.
Cons: It can take a bit more time to get to places and locations as you need to make your own way there and it may not be as scenic as on a river cruise. Also, you generally won't get to see as many things as you would on a river cruise.
No matter how you choose to visit the Netherlands during Tulip Time, it's sure to be an unforgettable experience. From the beautiful gardens to the bustling auctions, to the history, the canals, and the culture - there's something for everyone to enjoy.
